What is the Craniosacral System?

The Craniosacral system includes:
• the dura mater – the membrane that surrounds the brain and spinal cord
• the bones to which it is attached – the cranium and sacrum (tailbone)
• the cerebrospinal fluid – the fluid which nourishes and protects the brain and spinal cord.
The CS system houses the brain and spinal cord, hence its condition exerts a powerful influence upon the functioning of the entire body. As all nerves going to and from the brain pass through the dura, abnormal tension patterns in this membrane can aggravate nerves and their associated structures. Furthermore, pressure on blood vessels entering and exiting the brain through the dura can reduce nutrition and oxygen to the brain and spinal cord. Finally, the pituitary gland, the master gland of the body, sits at the base of the brain, directly on the dura mater thus making it susceptible to the health of the CS system as well.
